I found this online within the township's web site, and had to point out the "flaws" with this piece of information.
Dear Resident:
Our recent back to back snow storms prompted so many calls and emails that a group
response seemed the most efficient way to reply, so I'm writing to share some of the issues that
affect our plowing efforts. Our snow plow operators work long hours in adverse conditions, and
all of the parked cars, fire hydrants, mailboxes, utility poles, etc., make it far more difficult to plow
residential streets than highways or vacant parking lots. Additionally, the fear of hurting a person or pet or of damaging
private property adds greatly to the stress of residential snow plowing.
Nonetheless, our Public Works Department (PWD) plows after each and every storm, and they did a great job of
plowing the 7 or 8 inches of "unpredicted" snowfall we got throughout the day on 1-26. Unfortunately, the 17+ inches
that started falling that very same night along with high winds and bone numbing cold resulted in a rash of abandoned
vehicles, fallen trees, and downed power lines, and those factors severely compromise our ability to clear the roads as
quickly as we would have liked. Accordingly, we hired outside contractors to assist us, and their unfamiliarity with the area
created some additional problems.
I offer the above as an explanation, not an excuse. Despite the fact that we were praised by Fox News 29 for our
snow removal efforts, I wish we could have done an even better job. So to those who waited longer than usual for plows
to arrive, and to anyone whose street was plowed poorly, I offer my apologies, and to everyone who offered praise and
compliments, on behalf of our hardworking PWD staff, I say thank you.
Also, although we're already well over-budget, Council and I want you to know that we'll make sure our roads
continue to be plowed as quickly, efficiently, and safely as possible, but we need your help! It's far more time
consuming and costly to plow around parked vehicles! Please enlist the help of friends or neighbors if you must, but
please make every effort to get your car off the road when a snowstorm is predicted.
Our Councilmen, Joe Szafran, President, Ed Kisselback, Vice President, Joseph Knowles, Secretary, Joe
Pilieri, Member and Tony Belfield, Member all join me in thanking you for your cooperation and understanding, and we
apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced during the last snow storm.
Sincerely,
Mayor Joseph DiGirolamo
Bensalem Township
Let's start with a reality check here.
This is the second year in a row that the township has SCREWED UP snow maintenance!! If they had any inkling of a brain, they would have consulted cities in snow prone areas/states like Chicago, Buffalo, Michigan, Wisconsin, and the western half of PA. If they did, they would have been better prepared for something like this, and could have figured out a way to do this within budget!! Its bad enough to learn that the township has been plagued by over spending, corruption, and incompetency, but this affects our safety, and only proves that there is NO real emergency plan, in case of an even worse disaster.
This "explanation" is nothing more than a flimsy excuse to cover for the incompetency of this township.
Come next Year tell Joey D ... "You're fired!!"
